That is so true, I cropped out some boring tips of trees at base of hands but maybe that was a mistake??

Probably not a mistake. There would be a fine line here... u don't want something distracting in the image.. there is not likely an easy way to achieve size perspective with this photo.
You also could try to get further below them and shoot up using your widest-angle lens. That tends to add more depth to a photograh, like when people take pictures of tall buildings or trees that seem to loom at you in a picture.
