I followed the "Watching & Waiting Tutorial" by Judi. I took me a few hours, and I don't know photoshop nearly as well as she does. Anyhow, I think it came out pretty good. What do you all think? I didn't understand all of the details, as I do not know masking or adjustment layers, but I tried! :)

No seriously, only two nitpicks:
the raven merges too much with the background (background should be a little brighter) and there's a greenish area at the neck of the guy.

Also, I saw that this could be done with sepia and USM, but how? There are different colors in it... I thought sepia was only a brown/white like a black/white. I'd love to learn how to do this even quicker!
As for the bird, there was a step in the tutorial to pull the bird (subject) out of the background, but it didn't work for me. When I put a mask over the curves adjustment layer and did a paintbucket black with a white paintbrush to erase the background, it didn't seem to work. I wonder if that's a CS3 thing, as the tutorial was done in CS2. The adjustment layer with the mask didn't look the same on my computer and in the tutorial. Hmmm.

I'm not sure, but I *think* you have to make the mask visible and selected in the channels palette to paint on it.

that's surprising because it does work the same in CS2 and 3, with the same icons, names etc. you should try again because aplying layer masks to adjustment layer is a must in many cases. When I do PP, 90% of my adjustment layers have layer masks. Happy to give you more precisions if you want.

Hi Judi, thank you! I have never used that before. I, sadly, didn't clone out on a separate layer and don't want to go backwards and redo the bird. Hmmm, I'll know better for next time!
