I had a few pictures printed 4x6 of a model I recently shot. The shots looked good on the computer, but when I got the prints a lot of them sucked. Too much saturation or blown out in some areas. Granted, I just ran up to the local CVS, so I am wondering if a larger professional lab won't have those problems. I obviously don't want to have all this time taken by editing and then have the prints suck. Anyone else have these problems and what are your suggestions?

... and two questions ...

Is your monitor calibrated?
What colour profile is assigned to the images you got printed?

I use the spider 2 software to calibrate my monitors. Also, I do not know what color profile they used. whenever I send off the pictures (adorama, mpix), they come back OK. But at the local drugstore they look like crap. I suppose I could just stop using them, but it is convenient to just get a quick look at a few shots.

I had some pictures printed by our local CVS a couple years ago. They looked terrible! I took the same files to another place and had them printed again. They were much better! I took the good prints back to CVS and showed them the difference. They gave me my money back.

Most of the people who run the machines in drugstores and other mass market places don't know much about photography. The place that gave me good prints was not a "larger professional lab" but it was a place that specialized in photography. I think the equipment they had was the same sort that the drugstore had, but they knew how to run it. If you have a convenient local drugstore with someone who knows what they are doing, it is fine to use them.
