I was wondering where the hell "viewpoint media player" came from... I can't decide if I'm going to reformat or just try my hand at ad-ware removal..... I hate assholes who invade my privacy.
Support the open-source community and use GAIM for all of your IM needs. Why run multiple messaging clients when you can run just one? =)
Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.
Or go one step further and become a Jabber user, which will let you chat on all the IM versions at the same time (done via the server, unlike Trillian's via the client).
It's not just AOL, everything and anything you download these days comes with extra little goodies to really bog up your system. Don't be fooled, downloading a trial version or full version of everything from Zone games to media player will bring along all sorts of treasure which you agree to having by clicking "I understand and accept the terms", it's actually written right into those agreements, but who reads them? Nobody really.

The "Viewpoint Media Player" is a graphical display platform, and not SpyWare. It is bundled with AIM for purpose of displaying SupperBuddys.
SuperBuddy(tm) Icons: Have More Fun Online. AOL's Instant Messenger(tm) service comes alive with new 3D icons that actually act out some of your common phrases and chat abbreviations. When you type "LOL," your SuperBuddy icon rolls with laughter.
I actually know some folks at Viewpoint and they are extraordinarily talented engineers, technologists, and artists. They are driven to entertain and push the boundaries of the 2D web. They are not concerned about tracking your web browsing, but they are interested in seeing if you open the doors to the 3D automobile they spent months in CAD to develop.

thats just not true. i probably transfer 50+ gigs a month and i never get spyware or virus's or any of those "goodies". just to be smart at where you surf. but ya, dont download free shit.. "nothing is really free".

Depends on what you count as 'free shit' - there are many good freeware programs out there, along with all the free (as in speech) software produced by the Open Source community... but yeah, always be careful what you download, and run anti-spyware & anti-virus software on a regular basis.
I quit using IM programs over a year ago, because of the funky stuff that was happening to my PC. Many programs, shareware, freeware or purchased software install some type of AOL stuff on your PC, I hate this and I hate AOL,
I remember a day when surfing the net was fun, lately my list of web sites I visit regularly has shrunk to less than 10. I hardly ever download any new software because of the spyware/adware problems that have reached epidemic proportions. Heck in a few years I may not be "connected" anymore....its just too much of a hassel these days

I was under the impression that all these extra little problems are becoming a HUGE problem. Hmm guess, it's just me, but I appreciate all these anti-spyware, etc companies spending all that cash just for little ole me to have a clean hard drive.
Can anyone tell me how I got Viewpoint onto my 'puter? I've found a folder labeled Viewpoint Experience Technology in the Program Files folder. It is 4MB. I've never used AOL. Neither Ad-aware nor Spybot seem to regard it as spyware.

They had distribution deals with Adobe and are core to Adobe's Atmosphere 3D product. They are also in AOL's Instant Messenger program, I believe V 5.5 and above.
One other method of distribution is through site content. You could have possibly gone to an internet site with VWPT enabled objects, and been given the option to install the plug-in to view the content correctly.

TY DJLuba. I didn't think it was spyware. I take it that Viewpoint is sort of like Macromedia Flash. But I am still a little purturbed about how it got onto my computer. I probably would have declined if I had been given a choice. I'm sure I would remember that.

any additional software you've been tricked into accepting is usually well hidden in those legal agreements...

How are you "tricked" if something is disclosed in a legal agreement and you choose not to read it, yet accept the agreement stating that you have read and understood the agreement? I miss how it is anyone's fault but your own.
as far as GAIM goes.. i tried it out recently, but couldn't seem to figure out how to File Transfer properly or how to get rid of the huge icons by everybody's SN.. any pointers?
good news if you're me: My computer is running at much better resources now.. I used to chug at around 50% and programs would randomly crash.. Since deleting aim and getting trillian - coupled with downloading and using Spysweeper: I have deleted some 200+ traces of spyware software from my computer.. and I am up to 80% resources. I also don't leak memory now.. its wonderful. Now, my next step is hard-drive clean up.. I am winning the battle. I took back internet explorer so I deleted opera. Things are looking up :)
