Honestly, I start typing, and nothing came out the way I wanted... I just love Photography/Art, it's connected to my soul. "Photography" what I want to do until I die and to known by after I died.
Fulfills two distinct needs/obsessions in me: being a gadget head and needing to express myself outside of my job (read visual expression not prose). As someone with at least mild obsessive compulsive disorder I enjoy the whole process, from planning, through taking the pictures and then printing/publishing them and have long learned that I am my harshest critic.
its the one way I can find to escape myself. when I am shooting, I am no longer aware of myself. Editing brings something similar. I think my obsession is like alcohol, drug addiction or being devoutly religious. It is the great escape. At first I thought i was trying to express myself. Over time, I realize the real truth is much more psychotic...i just want to escape myself.

grigrigirl, you are doing pretty good "escaping yourself" ;)

I have never heard the "what are you a photographer" question answered in this way and I was shocked to realized that what you have said makes perfect sense to me. When I'm shooting or editing it's not really about expressing myself, it's about allow the subject, human or not, to express itself. As you described, I escape from myself. Odd, but I feel better now.
A little of both I guess. I enjoy the fact that we can capture an everyday moment with a camera and get new insights. I believe it helps me not to take for granted things in front of me. Besides riding my bicycle, photography is one of the best ways to enjoy the day!
cheers,

I see something, I want to remember it and share it with others, there is so much beauty in this world, in the mundane or the exotic...how could I possibly remember it all??

It is, of course, not an 'escape' at all, but rather a 'practice of affections' and a 'staying one's course'. When we do this -even when we 'fall into' into it, we may have 'escaped' our ego but hardly the 'self'.
To think of it as entering a religious state is interesting, since, historically, art was first conceived by religion.
To speak casually and say "When I'm shooting, I'm no longer aware of myself," shows quite clearly
who we really are when we live for an instant.
The 'psychosis' (the 'escape') is following the other rabbits.
-which reminds me of something somebody said:
"Common sense is the enemy of creativity."
This is a little incomplete and not fair as a response. I ran out of time.
