Andy, I've worked as a contract photographer for Virtual Imaging Corp out of Illinois for several years shooting MLS listings for Trend. I cover two counties and have recently taken on additional territory, part of which I subcontract to a friend. It's interesting work particularly if you like being in control of your workday. Recently, VIC merged with a company called Zaio in Arizona that is building a nationwide data base of photos for real estate appraisers. I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to but it involves a lot of volume shooting and the use of voice-activated software.
I think if you enjoy shooting photos this kind of work will definitely agree with you and you can always slip in some creative shooting along the way.

If you read the Zaio website and watched their power point promo then you have an idea of what this entails. It's pretty labor-intensive when you consider you'll be shooting upwards to 500 photos/day. Also, depending on where you live, weather is a major consideration as far as output is concerned.
An office job could look very appealing after a week of doing this.
Ask yourself this. If you spent 40 hours a week shooting nothing but stock images how much would you be making n 6 months? A year? At least if you are building your OWN stock portfolio you can benefit from risidual income.

That's something my business offers, well sort of. We do virtual tours for new listings/builds if requested. Not that it takes much time to do (about an hour a house). Just put the cam on a tripod and spin her around =)
We have $400 per virtual tour. So there may be some money there for you if you can buy some decent tour software.
