I have absolutely no idea if this would work or not but I thought I'd share it anyway......

I have seen this idea before and I guess if it steadies the camera, then it works.

Don't know if I would use this setup, but someone is bound to catch on and make a more professional looking piece of equipment and market it for a lot more money.

Why not make one and let us know how it works out??

I made one of these yesterday but I haven't taken it out for a test run. I did put my camera
on it to get a feel. I think it would work good against vertical movement at the point of
attachment but not for the front of the lens. If you use a long lens I can't see how it would
help much. I'll have to take it out when the rain stops and see.

One change i made to the design is instead of the big washer I used another piece of hardware i
found that had a place to tread the bolt into. So after you wind the string up you can attach
the two pieces together so the string stays wound up.

Saw this a few days ago. Strikes me as similar to a monopod, but with upward tension. Ought to help if you like to travel light. Can't beat the price.

And I dont think its going to help stablize a lens of any weight. As you will still have to be supporting the weight of the lens and then have to pull it up even harder to keep the tension on the "stabilizer"
