Don't do it, if for no other reason than they're SUPER sensitive, jolt it or drop it and it's toast. A one gig good drive is upwards of $1000, unless the price has dropped recently.
Target has the Apple 4GB iPod Mini for $250 - 10% coupon code TCAB2SAVETEN or TDAW2SAVETEN = $225 + $5 shipping. If you're a student or educator, you can buy it directly from Apple's store for $230.
If you dissect the iPod, there is a 4 GB Hitachi CompactFlash Type 2 Microdrive inside which might be usable for digital cameras. The microdrive sells for $400+.
The Hitachi 4 gb microdrives are going for about $250 to $285 on ebay. Go to the Memory Cards category and search for Hitachi 4gb or Hitachi 4 gb. You'll find dozens to choose from.
I didn't read your article but many people have been dissecting the Creative MuVo2 (or something like that) player to extract the drive. Not only have I heard of success stories but also some people then stick a CF card (say 256 or 512 mb) back into the player and get it working again also.

The MuVo hack is apparently pretty well documented, however, the iPod drives appear to be built to communicate only in IDE mode, which makes them less than useless for most cameras. Posts in the linked discussion thread directly confirm that it does not work.
One poster in that thread claimed that Creative is also going to start using microdrives, so the MuVo hack may go away as well.
