I used to think that it never snowed in the Middle East, til I lived here! There's mad snow storms here in Jordan at the moment and the whole country has come to a complete stand still! Some pictures of snow in the Middle East!
Can I suggest that you try to capture 'arabian' looking buildings and people with the snow, so as to make sure that you get the contrast of the hot middle east stereotype with the unnatural snow. Otherwise the viewer wouldn't know that it's out of the ordinary and just looks like a snow scene...

Definitely - the signpost one is more in the direction of what I was thinking. Speaking as a relatively ignorant westerner who hasn't visited Jordan yet, one of the arabian stereotypical images is the minorette (sp?) I think - or at least the beautiful architectures. Visibility looks really bad at the moment but if you get enough clear time it might be worth shooting some snow covered buildings - I'd try both wide out and up close (maybe crop to a snow covered feature like an arch, or doorway).
one of the effects of global warming is potentially an ice age. basically the polar snow that's melting now is salt water - but the inland ice is fresh water. when that melts - it changes the density of the ocean water - which in turn effects the wind - which in turn effects the ocean current. basically the currents stop. no warm southern water brought by currents northward means that the nothern part of the world will get colder before it gets warmer...
so you might want to put your foot in your mouth ;}

It snowed in Oman a couple of years back... and that is a whole lot more southern (read: equatorial) than jordan. Cant remember exactly where but i think it might have been in one of the Wadi valleys near the Wahiba Sands (the big desert which covers much of oman and goes into saudi).
And yeah - i dont think of "Global Warming" - i'm a brit, and it certainly aint warming up, you only need to see our recent summer to realise that! "Climate change" is the phrase i think...

Ya, but I bet she gets a lot of practise with sand. ;o) Sand fools the meter in much the same way as snow does.
Fair enough! What I really like is the foggy look, though - was it actually foggy or actively snowing? Really gives great depth. And the palm-tree-with-snow imagery is great.

I was cheering for global warming... but damn that sucks! I HATE cold weather.
I assume you were kidding about cheering for global warming. Anyhow, the new "ice age" theory sounds like the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" -- however, man-caused global warming is real and will likely cause extreme weather of all kinds.
And by the way, I checked, you don't need to register on the NY Times site to see that great Reuters photo.

This certainly is the year of freak weather. I'm sitting here at -2 and that's record breaking for us. Snow's damn near impossible but certain parts of the country are experiencing snow for the first time so ugh.. I'm dreading what the future holds in store for us..
