I'm going to Colorado in the next couple of days and I kind of want to take my tripod with me. I'm not sure how much I'll use it and not totally sure it's worth taking. I know i'll be doing some landscape photography but it should be sunny for the most part or if not I'm thinking I can just balance my camera on something (I do have a gorilla pod which could be useful and i'm planning on bringing).
The tripod would take up a lot of space in my suitcase and that's why i'm not 100% sure about bringing it. What do you guys think?
Also, I'm assuming you cannot travel (in the US) with a regular tripod in your carry on right? Does anybody know?

I can't imagine doing any landscape photography without a tripod, especially if you have any intention of hitting the key time slots for best light (dawn/dusk). I'd figure a way to work it in. Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy!
it depends if you shoot classical style landscapes in the good light. If you do, you need a tripod, but you'd already know that. If you don't, or you don't normally use your tripod, then don't bother.
As a seasoned traveler (over 3/4 of a million miles), I travel most every week. Some of those weeks I travel with a tripod. I don't normally bring my very large and expensive one, but I bring a tripod nonetheless. It has its own drawstring bag with strap, so I put it in there. It also makes it less noticeable when walking around airports. I always carry it on-board with me. I usually place it in my roll-a-board suitcase in the outside pocket area, with half of it sticking out.
When you go through security, place it separately on the conveyor belt (it can stay in its bag). After security, I put the it back in my roll-a-board (again, half sticking out). The reason I do this is because we are allowed two carry-on pieces. I have my camera and computer gear in my backpack and the roll-a-board makes two pieces (with tripod in it).
Once I get on the plane, I take the tripod out and put it up above along with my suitcase. I put my backpack under the seat in front of me (sometimes in the overhead compartment as well).
I have never had my camera bag or the tripod questions or searched. <Les knocks on wood>. I have had my suitcase searched quite a few times (due to all the computer equipment stuffed in it), but not my camera gear. ;-)
So, my advice to you is...go ahead and bring it. If you don't use it, fine; but if you don't bring it and later regret not having it, well, you can't blame me! :-)
