It snowed in the mountains near us and i wanted to go and do some shooting. I just don't know how to capture
scenery with all the whiteness. Any tips for snow photography?
The camera metre will try and make it middle gray, which usually looks blah for snow pics..... start with +1 comp and see how it goes. It will depend a lot on the sun... keep an eye out on blown whites though.
Use exposure compensation and expose between + 1 & 2 stops. Check the histogram and make sure you are to the right as far as possible without going over.
I would say that if you wanted to get the exposure just right, a grey card or expodisc would be necessary, whenever I try to shoot snow things usually come out gray since auto-exposure systems expose for grey and don't really get full black or white scenes.
If there's something in the scene that you can meter off of, like a tree, that would be better than nothing.
