I have minimal space to shoot indoors and no suitable backgrounds, or enough wall anywhere. I really need some kind of background material that I can hang over stuff to at least hide all the crap that surrounds my indoor shoots (e.g. for the Six challenge I had to hang a black jacket over a 'ELECT ARNIE' plastic campaign board and then wedge it in the topside of a PC case shell - major PITA!).
What's a good easy/cheap way to do this?
I was either going to buy a few metres of cheap velvet online (about 5 quid a metre) or buy a large blank canvas and spray paint it matt black. The velvet seems more convenient but needs to be hung somewhere, whereas the canvas is more cumbersome.
Are there any other options I should be thinking about, and are there any major issues with the ones I'm considering? What works for you?
for quick and fairly inexpensive background material, consider using bedsheets. They come in a wide array of colors and are easily stored when not needed. I find that full size flat sheets are large enough to cover bout anything you need to hide.
Aren't bedsheets too thin? Am worried about flash lighting up stuff behind it, so was going to go for a thicker material like velvet. Was going to use black out material but it's 50% cotton and 50% polyester, and the dyes I found wouldn't do both...
Throw some stuff out, buy some flat latex paint... cheap :-D
If ya need a cheap background though, go to a fabric store and buy about 6 or 7 yards of wide muslin fabric. You can dye it any color you want... or if you're feeling froggy you can paint on it.
That's my problem and why I have to shoot indoors stuff either macro, narrow or light painted in the dark!!!
Will check out muslin, although I think I'm going to do muslin and a spray painted hardboard/canvas of some sort (maybe foam if I can find some) just to keep myself covered.
