Well, I thought reading the topic head that your objection would be a little different than what it turned out to be. "Watergate" became synonymous with "scandal", basically; so whenever a new scandal popped up, instead of calling it "the watergate of whatever" the press started calling it "whatevergate". This makes perfect sense to me.
No, what bugs ME is when they take trivial things and try to elevate them to "gate" status at all. Gimme a break! Calling a broken-down bench heater a scandal on the level of Watergate" trivializes the gatehood of all real scandals :-)
