I can't help but feel like I'm not able to display my actual pictures in the basic editing challenges because when I optimize down to 150 KB, I lose so much of the color in my photos. Is this normal or am I not optimizing properly?

To optimize down to that file size, I change the image size to no bigger than 640 pixels on the longest side and then "Save for Web..." in Photoshop and optimize just low enough to get the biggest file size allowed. Any help will be much appreciated!

What you are doing is pretty much what i do so i dont really know where you are going wrong.

Maybe what you are describing is the loss of a colour profile which tends to give a more saturated look in photoshop and then when the save for web happens it just gets rid of the profile and looks really bad?

With the file open (i know this isnt perfect but it gives you an idea for the difference it makes sometimes) in photoshop goto View>Proof Setup>Monitor RGB, then make sure the View>Proof Colours is checked on and you will see that the image looses some saturation and brightness (well it does in my case anyway).

My nomral fix for that is to give the whole image a slight saturation boost so it looks insanely saturated "normally" in photoshop and it should come out alright.

also - just to check - you do sharpen your images after resize yes? :)

Are you editing in a color space other than sRGB? If you are, and you're not converting to sRGB before "Save for Web," then that is your problem. Save for Web does not convert, but simply strips out color management information.

Hmm, does look like the behavior is changed in CS3. In earlier versions of PS, this was a very common problem. Glad to see it appears to be fixed.
