If you have a flash which can swivel it's head - try "bouncing" the flash off of the wall behind you or to the side... that way the light is really diffuse and the specular highlights (technical term for the white spots if i remember correctly) wont show.
Otherwise you can try diffusing the light coming from your camera's flash with tissue, tracing or just plain paper. Doubt it would be as effective as doing the bounce as explained above.
If you have an offboard flash which doesnt swivel then you can actually take the thing off the camera set it to manual, point it at the place you want the light to bounce off... set the camera up on a tripod, use a darkened room, a long exposure and shoot the flash manually when the shutter is open...
