What is a W-8? I've finally gotten a request for a billing invoice from the company that bought my photo. They required 1 of 3 things, the first 2 didn't apply because I'm not a US citizen or living in the US, but the other was something called a W-8. Any idea?
Yeah, if the company is US-based its how they report payments to non-us contractor. Its a very short form, just needs a signature & your address, etc.

I'm Canadian, living in Japan, selling to a US company. The form, as simple as it may seem, is not to me. And there seems to be a few different W8 forms. Not sure which one I'm suppose to use.

Can you ask the company who bought your picture to send you the W8 they require?
That's what I just did. Hopefully they will answer soon. I think it's the W8ECI form. Question 9 in there is confusing me a bit...
I would list "Payment for sale of photography" on that line & let it go.
Thanks. That makes things a lot easier. I never knew selling to US based companies would require so much paperwork. I've sold some images within Asia, and it's just a release form, no tax forms.
