I don;t get the challenge criteria. Can any shed some light?
Simply photgraph something... black! This is truly a challenge; black objects can be quite difficult to photograph well. Emphasis on well. Lighting will be key for the best shots.
Now if I can only come up with something good...
I strongly suggest some monitor adjusting. I just submitted and unsubmitten my entry three times trying to get the lighting right. I've experienced this before (as I know others have) - what looks fine in Photoshop and in Neat Image is TOOOO dark what I view "preview your entry" I lightened it up quite a bit - look fine now but if viewed in Photoshop it lost its punch and shiney texture. Ah well... hope adjustment worked -- I'll know by the comments.

Yep, this is a tricky one,, just uploaded mine and it lost have the image due to looking too dark..
I'm wondering if my photo will be marked down a lot if it has a light colored background. Is everything in the photo supposed to be black? Well, not a black bear type of black, but dark?

The way I read it, take a picture of something black is the challenge. That's the way I will vote, on the quality of the picture and the black subject.
My background is white. OF course, I am not the best judge to read the voters. I have "missed it" many, many times. :-)
I agree Karma. I've given up on trying. I just shoot now and enter. If someone likes it, cool. BTW, I won't be judging on background, just the black subject. hahahaha
I'm very excited to see what comes out of this challenge. It's very interesting to me and at first had a hard time coming up with something, but I like what I ended up with. For what it's worth, I also have a white background. But since the challenge states to take your best shot of something black, I think as long as your subject is black (or mostly black) then it should be ok. At least that's my thinking anyways. I guess we'll see when the voting starts though.
A white background shouldn't affect the photo meeting the challenge (my opinion, but I'm only one voter). But the background is an important part of any photo. There is a lot of contrast between a black subject and a white background; whether that is good or bad depends on what such a photo is trying to convey.

Here's what I do, before I adjust my photo, I go to view/proof setup/monitor RGB, notice your photo will be darker. Then go ahead with your adjustments.
yeah i agree.. that a white background shouldn't affect the voting. Put perhaps a black background could be very interesting if the shot still worked.
I think that subjest that are very original are going to recieve extra points from me. I wonder how many of the same images of the same subject we are going to find in this challenge. I am exciting to vote tonight.
My entry evolved from a feeling (very slight) of anger after Rita and self got in an argument over my interest in a new camera. That Powershot Pro 1 sure looks good. 8 megapixil and it looks like they got chromatic aberration under control.
I know I’m getting a low score and I don’t care. I plan on making everyone suffer for it!

I did mine over again and now I hope it will be my best scoring one so far (no one can stop me from dreaming). I didn't have time to take one for the 4 elements because I got so involved with this entry. This was fun.
