I second that. I live about an hour from Atlanta and have friends who live in Atlanta. Right now the cost of living is much higher than the average income and its only getting worse. The cheap houses are selling for around $250k and many of those are old and run down. If you don't mind living in a modular home(trailer) you can find something for under 200k. New you are looking at 300k and up depending on the neighborhood. If you have school age kids GA is ranked 36th as far as education.
GA is currently in a severe drought. A few north GA towns have already run out of water and many(N GA) don't know how much water they have left. At one point they were saying 90 days or less. We have had a couple days rain but it didn't raise the water table because more water is being let out than coming in. Army Corp of Engineers continues to pull water from Lake Lanier(main Atlanta Area water supply) to protect an area that has endangered species. The lake where we live feeds into Lake oconee and it is no more than the main river channel now(10ft wide). Lake Oconee water is fed down to Lake Sinclair to be sure the Georgia Power Plant has enough water to produce the needed electricity. This is the main plant for the Southeastern States, it produces for GA, AL, TN, SC, and NC.
GA can be a nice place to live but right now I'd steer clear unless you have a really awesome well paying job.
I think you should take a look at. Pretty good public transportation and cost of living is pretty good as well. Small big city with Raleigh, and lots of artsy folks with 3 major universities within 30 miles of each other. However, as with all things your research is more important than my stumping for where I live.

I second that vote, my wife's family lives in Raleigh and we go pretty frequently. As long as you're not downtown, the cost of living is reasonable and the art market is pretty good there. I get clients from the Raleigh area.
You are crazy!! I was amazed at how the pulse New Orleans got into your blood....couldn't shake it for days when we got back...the hubby and I have talked about going back to see if it still had the same vibe since Katrina!
(mind you, we didn't get to stay long or do much but it was pretty amazing)

I'd say Seattle, but it takes some getting used to. Cost of living here is very localized - in and around the city - very high, out in the burbs - not so much, but going up - a little farther out - still reasonable. Are you planning on renting an office or studio for your business?
The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area are actually pretty cool, and the cost of living I found to be extremely reasonable...particularly the Fort Worth area...I actually miss living there quite often. I just really liked the vibe of the area.
Nice to see two Utah cities on that list. That doesn't necessarily help you out much though, because it doesn't have a lot of factors you are looking for. For example, I wouldn't consider Utah a very artsy place, and a lot of people in Utah, especially Provo(which was #2 on that list), like to do things the cheap way. We try to do things for ourselves as much as possible, and we like to find good deals.
