I don't want to sound like a cry baby but a recent challenge (things that go together) has me very confused as what combines to make a good photograph. Obviously, subject matters and how it relates to the challenge topic in addition to color, tone, focus, composition among others.
One of my biggest areas of confusion in the judging process is compression. If there is too much, it will pixelate the image and detract from its clarity and focus. I don't know how many others out there take the time to consider that aspect as much as I do especially since we must use compression to make our images fit the requirements. If I can't clearly make out what I'm looking at or if the compression distorts the image, I will deduct some serious points.
Again, I don't want to complain about where my entry placed as I thought it was fairly decent considering the time I spent on it (about 30 min total setup time and only 5 or 6 shots taken) but rather illustrate part of the criteria I use when judging entries sometimes is overlooked. |
