These are two images I was considering for this challenge.However, the write up on the challenge suggested to me that a more creative use of shallow DOF was wanted than purely using it to isolate the subject.
Looks like I misread it by the way my submission is heading.

That's a nice shot. I see the DOF too, but I agree, many would miss it. Sad, but life is hard, then you get a new 12 pack of beer and jump in the jacuzzi. :)
I like this shot.
My guess is a tambourine?
Is that a band adjust screw?
I like the pattern on the wood and the different textures.
The lighting is nice also. A little harsh in one or two spots but nice.

I really like tabla-01-tone quite a bit. I would've scored it well. I hate when you have two or three good shots and you just can't decide. I'm always second guessing myself, but there's not much you can do. Never know what folks will be in the mood for at the moment of voting... Nice shots though!
I'd search for a different light source to light the whatdoyacallit skin (?) of the tamburin. The grid you now see on it is a bit distracting. Was it struck or moved when you too the photo? The far edge looks unnaturally fuzzy (instead of the fine bokeh associated with shallow dof).
This was my idea, but ended up not submitting. The DOF I ended up with here, I did in PS trying out the lens blur tool. The original shot at F2.8, just wasnt shallow enough for the effect I wanted.

Hmmmm, that's interesting. The lines on the skin are what attracted me to the photo in the first place. I like the tones of the B&W one better, better contrast, IMO. Just goes to show, that different people are looking at different things.

The light is everything that's good about this shot for me. The colours between the blues and orange work well together as comp colours and the textured shadows from the light make the image interesting to look at and also mirror the patterns in the edge of the tambourine.
With shallow DoF, you've got all that space that isn't sharply in focus so colour and texture are the things you want to play with - the sharp
edge and pattern works well too - I like this shot a lot.
i think this is neat. i'd kind of like more color but im not gonna die if i dont get it. this shot makes me want to know what the shiny thing at the far end is!

That's a great shot and probably would've scored quite well, but I think people would've been a little turned off to it after finding out it wasn't accomplished via the camera but by PS. Personally, I don't care, if the outcome is appealing and interesting, I say "What the hay" but in the spirit of the challenge, might have been a little disappointing.
