I set the Flash Sync Speed to 1/250 (Auto FP)
I want to take a macro of something moving and therefore would like more than 1/250s. Can I set the speed higher. Say 1/500s?
Worth a try since it worked for me just one hour ago, albeit with the sb600
On the 200, in the flash menu,when you set commander mode, you get to the screen to adjust the output levels of the various flashes ... turn off the on-board flash.
The on-board flash will still flash to control the 800.
Pardon my ignorance but I have been reading this manual until I am cross-eyed. I have the SB800 in SU-4 mode. Set it on camera and then removed while powered on. Set built-in to commander mode.

Camera set to Manual F20, 250x or 250 and that's as high as it goes.
Any ideas what I am missing?

You'll have to be in manual mode (although perhaps aperture or shutter priority mode will work, too).

Put it in remote mode, not SU-4 mode (although theoretically, I think that should work, too).
Make sure the strobe is set on the same channel (in this case, channel 1).
The remote connection is working. However, the camera speed has a maximum of 1/250s. I am trying to capture something that is falling and need the speed closer to 1/500s. I've tried with the speedlight on and off the camera but so far am kept within the 1/250s limit.

Yep. Remote and SU-4 work as far as the connection goes. Still limited on shutter speed though.
You already said in your first post that you set the camera to high speed sync (Auto FP). Is that not the case, because you need to do this for shutter speeds faster than 1/250 to work.

What mode are you in? If it's program (P) mode, I don't think this will work.
You need to set the SB800 to FP mode. I'm not familiar with it but you should have some button that changes the flash mode. Just cycle through the different flash modes until you get something that says "FP".
ETA: I use a canon 20D with Sigma flash and for that I set the flash to FP mode and then it allows my camera to set a shutter speed faster than 1/250. If I don't set the flash to FP then the camera won't let me choose the faster speed. Not sure if that's how it works with the Nikon but it might be the same thing.

I turned off the camera and flash. Connected the flash. Turned everything back on and set the flash to remote. Checked the Auto FP mode on the camera and then checked the speed and was able to set the higher speed.
However, when I remove the flash from the camera the speed is again limited to 1/250.

This might be a stupid question, but I'm trying to exhaust all the options here. Are you going in the longer shutter direction--toward and past bulb--to the x250 shutter speed?
Not too familiar with the D200, but does is allow you to set it as the master flash? If so, set the channels to coincide, set the camera's sync speed to 1/250 (auto FP) and that should do it.

I gone in both directions. To the 250x and in the complete opposite direction to 250.
If I close the builtin flash then I can set the speed higher but I do not control the remote flash. Can I turn off builtin flash limits so that I can leave it open?
