So I have several shots for the DOF, but for the life of me, no matter how much I like one of the shots, I know it will get slaughtered in the scoring. I took two different concepts and came out with 3 shots, two similar, but now am debating on whether to even enter because of the drive-by voting as of late. Stupid or cautious? My wife says I'm stupid and to enter for the fun of it. hahahahaha
You're right about the drive-by voting but if it's an appealing image it will automatically be given a "second look." Just like when it's a good image it receives more comments. Human nature pure and simple.
I have a few shots I took earlier this week and I feel the same way.
I have been sick this weekend and have not been able to do anymore shots and I do not know if I will pick one of the shots I did earlier or not.
If I feel better later this evening I may just pick one and enter :)

If the "Garage Art" challenge has taught me anything.. it is to expect the unexpected and not to try to "second guess" what will appeal to the voters, just to submit the image that pleases me and take what comes :-)
OK, I entered one, even the one she though was best. My guess is it will be condemed the voters will think it was photoshopped even though it wasn't, but like the General said, I'll dream of hot babes rubbing my back on a sunny beach while I drink my ice cold Pena Colada and play chess with the masters.
I find it odd that people complain about low scores, driveby voters, and artistic shots scoring low.
From what I've seen this site has a pretty good sampling of the general public. If your submission scores low that means the majority of the general public didn't like it. That doesn't mean the general public is a bunch of morons, and/or didn't get it, and/or didn't spend enough time looking at it.
A low score doesn't mean it's a bad shot. It just means there were more people that dis-liked it then liked it.
Take a look at the scoring on some of the lowest rated shots. All of them have a few high scores from a few people that liked it.

i think i have a problem with the scoring too.. not that there is any problem with the scoring system.. it is just a little anoyance i have...i rather be in 40th place with a rating of 7 or 8 than with a rating of 4 or 5... you see what i am saying... it is just a personal dilemma i have.. the more i investigate the more faith i have in the rating system of this site... but if you are a radical photographer who takes pictures which might be unappelaling to the general public,, than you might be up for a surprise...
Do you have anyone giving your feedback on your photos ... more than the "that's nice dear" type. It's good to talk over a pic before entering ssomething.

I feel that everyone here is very supportive of each other. Even though some pictures are pretty bad, we give supportive comments. I don't think people would "condemn" each other's work since we know that everyone has put their time and effort into taking their picture. Ofcourse, the scores may be the ultimate painful reminder of the opinion of others, but it's important to remember that we are all still learning from each other. So, if you've got a picture that is just so so, and you would like it rated, then go ahead and submit it, never hurts to get a comment or two. Otherwise, the image would just sit there and go to waste, you'd never learn anything this way.
I submitted a picture that I think isn't too great, but hey, I'm playing around with my camera and whatever comes out comes out and it'd be interesting to see what other people think of it.
Well, I have to hand it to you guys. I listened and I'm not doing bad. I don't see a ribbon in my future, but I just knew I would get trampled. I expected much less than I'm recieveing, and as we know, that can change between now and the end, but still, I see some that like what I put up and that makes it worth it.
deafwolf..I'm new at this...been posting other places...but joined here to try the challenge aspect...I'm still getting used to the "rules"...my first try I went literal with the challenge...second time I obsessed over the size and now all my reviews say nice pix but too small...it's all for learning and fun...so don't have a cow man (to quote Bart the Sage)and just upload...and live to enter another challenge!!!
It is a little discouraging at times when you receive the occasional nasty unwarranted comment BUT you realize it is all totally worth entering when you get wonderful and warm responses. This is such a learning process for me. Critiques are meant to help you progress.
gpierson...you are so right...and if one wants to truly join (and post comments) it might quite seem like jumping into the deep end at times...lol...so we must swim with camera at the ready :)
although I now worry about the next submissions...*trembling as I hit the submit button* AGH!!!!
I am having my worst voted picture in DOF right now. I think it is a fairly good picture and fits the challenge well. But apparently the masses don't. It does raise some doubt, but at the same time, this site isn't really about winning, rather it is a about learning. Winning is a bonus on a truly excellent shot. And even the truly excellent shot may place last place on this site. You just never know what mood the voters are in.
Just try learn instead of getting caught up in the votes of others opinions. I don't know about anyone else, but I just like to take pictures for my, and a select group of friends, pleasure. Not to get a job with.
Have to admit my disappointment with the votes on my DOF entry. But oh well, I like it anyway. I'm sure I will get killed on my next entry as well.
I like my entry too. it's not doing so bad. I have 80 votes so far, 3 comments, 2 commented the exact same way I saw it. I just knew it wasn't a 6-pointer. Something to be said about the fluctuation of my score, at 73 votes, it was scoring 5.8082, 5 votes and 45mins later, it dropped to 5.7051... many more fluctuations to go.
Okay, .how many people take the perfect photo for the challenge...just about 24 hours before the challenge is annoucnced and can't use it. This happens to me quite frequently... Maybe I am just physic....or maybe just plain unlucky...I guess if I could tell the future, I wouldn't have taken the picture BEFORE the challenge was announced...Anyway, I spend a good portion of the week, and about 600 shots trying to recreat something similar that I liked. I guess I was prettly pleased with the results and it is doing well right now..so maybe it was worth the effort. Thank goodness for digital, could you imagine taking that many pictures with film!!! I guess I wouldn't have.
