You might want to check out the dpreview forum. There are many threads about this and various other wide angle lenses. The canon 17-40 is considered there to be one of the best albeit a little pricey.

It is a lot cheaper than the 16-35 I was thinking of getting. I've read reviews at luminous landscape and I'm just about phobic of dpreview forums. I was interested if anyone actually owned one though...
I have this lens but I just bought it about a week ago and we've been dealing with some illness in the family so believe it or not I haven't shot it very much yet. I'm going nuts here.
As soon as I get some photos I'll post them.
The few quick little snaps I shot around the house are awesome, though.
It's the next lens in the purchase lineup for me...shame that you have to spend that much for a quality 27-64mm zoom equivalent on the 10D, though. I plan on using it for street and landscape photography and when I add an Elan 7 body to my kit it should provide some cool ultra-wide shot possibilities. I have a wedding to do this spring and hope to get good use out of it there as well.
Likewise, I have 2 trips coming up, one to North Wales and the other will probably be in the Scottish Highlands. Have not done any proper landscape photography since I started taking pictures so a new lens was needed and I can't wait. Just love B&W landscapes so much..
I'd consider the Sigma 12-24 if you want a WA lens. It's high on my list of wants once I get my kitchen renovated and buy a DSLR out of what's left, if anything.
Plus if you go to my galleries ( from my profile), the wide angle shots in 'Venise' are taken with the 17-40 (look at the caption below the photo you will know).

Just got the 17-40mm f4L lens this week, took a couple of quick shots with it. Has a good feel to it, smooth, nice glass, and not too big or too heavy. I haven't printed any pictures with it yet, as I am in between photo printers.

Both of these were ISO 400 f/4 1/10th second with 550EX dialed down 3 stops.
The shadowing on the seated shot was due to some exercise equipment as we were doing a shoot in a local gym. I've been very happy with the clarity and contrast from this lens. Very little editing to either photo. Most of the exercise shots were done under contract and so they won't be posted here.
