I usually make an effort to totally ignore borders since I, like you, despise them all....but in the latest challenge there was one so horrendous, so blatantly obnoxious, that I had to score it down lest I lose sleep and/or moral fibre.
i used to like borders--but have gotten away from liking them for some reason. i would never mark down an image because of one 'cause i just look at the image itself and ignore the border, but sometimes it is hard 'cause some of them do detract, for sure.
i especially have gotten away from the ones that use colors--but i do have to say that one of the best ones i've seen lately is gordon's fantasia --that border really compliments the photo to a t.

I can see how people would like it, but I think the photo is just striking on its own, I wouldn't put a print like this up in my house with that border, I would crop it before I framed it. Reminds me too much of the 80's..then again, mullets are coming back so anything is possible ;-)
See to me, Gordon's isn't ideal.. But I also dislike mullets ;)
I like to see either white or black borders - simple as that. It's quite popular doing the 'lets match the main color into a think border' but I think it's slightly distracting in some cases.
This is bad border to me, which is stronger than the actual image: - and would be marked lower for the fact.

Edit - trying to find a plain / non existant border wasn't as easy as i thought, many people doing the line within the photograph thing..
well of course not. on the other hand--seeing how people choose to represent their artwork can be beneficial in helping you see things differently. for example, if that print were on my wall, i prolly would have just double matted it with white and black, cause thats what i always do. but because of his border, i can see now, that it would look cool with maybe black matting with a thinner one of that bluish color. you never know :)
anyway--speaking of mullets-i am appalled at the resurgence of those horrible trends--the leg warmers, the crinkle boots, the crimped hair, the blue eyeshadow--must my past come back to haunt me? :)
Can we also remove the ability to submit photos of cats, children, partially desaturated images, photos with small DOF, photos with large DOF, black and white photos...

Either way, it's still not so repulsive, and managed to score more than a mittfull of tens.

That's becasue it is a superb picture. Not sure it really affects voting overall, as the split between people who like that kind of border and the people who don't is pretty even.

i think that is the point. Since we CANT add a real frame to these pictures, we need a border to 'finish' them. .. without the frame it looks a bit lost.. like hanging a image on the wall without a frame and without a border on the picture.

Hmmm I've been in THIS conversation before... My two cents worth. A good border is one you don't even notice is there. I can't stand the borders that cover more surface area or have more textural detail than the shot it surrounds...

Did I mention it was flourescent? My eyes! My eyes! Hey..where'd you all go? No mom, I don't want to go to school today! .... you get the drift.
Once upon a time, borders were not allowed. Sometimes in cropping a picture, a small border may be left, which caused that picture to be dq'ed. The border rule was added to eliminate that.
The border can help or hinder, I agree, so choose carefully.
Choosing a border is as much of an art as taking a picture. Well, maybe not to that extent, but you know what I mean.
Some pictures I have taken absolutely need a border; without them there's obviously something missing...

I think there was a thread a while back that actually agreed that this is even too, some mark down like I, and others don't count it towards their vote..
Clever application of CSS and overlays with custom border colours would allow a limited variety of border styles. This would allow voters the ability to never see borders or to selectively turn them off during voting.
Personally, I don't pay much attention to the borders during voting, although the NG challenge had some absolutely hideous yellow borders.
