I have recently seen examples of photogs placing large areas of black to the side of a subject being photographed in studio. According to one recent reference the black was there to soak up some light and make the shadows more interesting. (I'm not sure if I am remembering exactly what he/she said and I don't remember who said it (obviously). I was reading in the quality of light side challenge (excellent stuff)).
Here is a recent setup that shows what I am talking about.
Can someone please explain the value of the black panel? It doesn't seem to be functioning as a gobo here and there are no other surfaces near enough to really bounce much light back at the subject. Does it serve any other purpose than blocking reflected light?
