Databases are good at tracking history if modeled correctly... you can delete a post and still maintain that info. Just cause you can't see it doesn't mean it no longer exists ;)
Actually I was talking about comments left on one's own photo.
IMO I think the report post or comment to the SC is the best way. We sometimes get comments that we don't like but they are not offensive or an attack on use. We would like to delete them but why delete a comment that given by a user, they may have had good intentions.
BUT...If it does cross the line SC will delete for you. I think people would stop commenting even more if we could delete there comments.
It's hard enough to generate comments now. Commenting would drop even farther if the only comments kept were the rosy, glowing, pat on the back ones (you know, the comments that many people mark "helpful" and yet ignore the ones with any hint of discord or even constructive criticism).
The remaining whispers of "learning" here at DPC would fade even more.
If a comment is so bad that it needs to be removed, bring it to the attention of SC (privately) and let them handle it.

What about the comments that have nothing to do with your photograph or your photography skills but concentrate on whatever perception the commenter has on your character? "Report post" helps, but in sticky situations, SC steers clear. I think an owner of a photograph should have full editorial control over it regardless. If some disingenuous person wants to edit out the honest criticism to make him/herself something that he/she isn't, what difference does it make? Such people don't care about improving themselves anyway.
you know what id like a delete comment button on is for the posts in the forums, sometimes i type things that mean totally nothing to what is being talked about and/or it makes me sound really dumb, but all i can do is go back and edit it to say bump:P

There are critiques which aren't all glowy that are possitive in their own way. Then there are comments that are just plain stupid, off-base and mean left by retards.
One takes thought and a bit of tact. The other takes a keyboard and a very basic knowledge of a written language.

I do believe the gist of the argument here is that comments that are by their very nature abrasive, offensive and of no redeemable value could be removed... which seems a far cry from the scenario you are suggesting.

already covered by the SC. I've had a few occasions to request comments/posts/threads being deleted (some of which were my own) and if the above reasons were given, the SC generally obliges.
Putting this power in the hands of the users cries out for abuse.
Works at modelmayhem, works at flickr ... I could keep going...
the thing is, if a person doesn't want a comment on his//her image, it should be in his/her control to remove it. If the generally do not like the comment anyway, leaving it there serves no purpose other than to provide a source of aggravation.
As stated earlier, the comment could continue to be stored in the databaase, yet hidden, so that abuse could be investigated.
