put my digital camera on self timer, eliminate the film altogether - get a photo of me saving the man, and if the photo didnt come out good.
throw him back in the water and try again ;}

a) I would use a 36-exposure roll (or maybe Super-8 movie film) with a high tensile strength so I could throw him a lifeline and not get my feet wet.
b) Whatever film is in my friend's camera.
