This is very true. I didn't fully understand for some time that the exposure system in cameras tries to determine the exposure relative to grey. So in the case of snow, which is very bright, the exposure system compensates and the result is underexposure (trying to make the color of the snow grey as well). That is why Gordon suggests using exposure compensation. You will want to add +0.5 to +1.5 EV to your exposure.
Good luck! And don't forget, with digital you don't waste film, so don't be afraid to take a picture.
Oh yeah, try to keep the sun to your back (or behind the plane of the camera). Not always possible, but it gives the best contrast.
