On the digital SLR and SLR-Like cameras, there is a Close-up mode on the camera dial. I'm trying to determine what this automatic mode causes the camera to do. The manual just says that you can use this mode for taking close-up shots, but I can't seem to determine what it causes the camera to do. I understand what the other automatic modes do, but this one puzzles me. Does anyone know how this mode might differ from the other automatic scene modes?

Ha. Good question. On mine it means I can't zoom. It also means auto-focus gets tired quickly and you have to shut off the camera. BUT it also allows me to focus closer than in other modes. (Newer models of this series are slightly changed). I suspect it also tends to use the widest aperture. I'm not at all sure having this mode is a virtue; possibly it may save time in making the auto settings more quickly. Prefer using tripod and setting focus, exposure and aperture manually. Which is not fast.

Ive read that when using this mode be sure to zoom at the longest length and then then camera does the calculations for you, what these calculations are, hell if I know-- I dont think anyone really uses this mode, do they

From what I understand it allows you to focus the subject at the lens closest focusing distance. If you have a zoom lens then you can zoom in to obtain a larger magnification. Really does not do anything if you have a fixed lens. A 1:1 macro fixed lens works a lot better than the "Close-up" mode but when without...you can use the mode.

Close-up mode works to balance the depth of field and the shutter speed, but with an overall preference for a shallow depth of field. This mode also controls the release of the pop-up flash, and uses Single shooting.

With preference for shallow DOF it doesn't sound like a Macro setting to me.
