Could I please have some suggestions on the best way to tackle this photo. The original is scanned at 600dpi and the size is 20x25cm. The photo is only 30 years old and was taken at one of those 'dress up in old time clothes for the photo places'. The colouring and contrast is not problem for me. But how do I get all the speckels out with spending hours? I tried despeckle but it made no noticable difference. I am using CS3.

I think the only way is going to be to manually clone them out, as the spots are too big to despeckle.
One technique I learned a long time ago was to create a duplicate layer, and blur the bottom one slightly, then erase areas with spots on the top layer. The major downside to this however is that the image will not be sharp.
It's a manual job to be sure, but prolly not hours worth. A half hour should clean it up pretty nicely. The real trick is not a trick at all but just having a level of skill with the cloning and healing brushes.
At 600dpi I'd guess the file size is *huge* or i'd say just send it to me and I'd give it a go.
If you want to reduce ti to 300dpi to make it e-mailable, I will have a go at it...

While there are eager beavers out there maybe you can give me suggestions on these. I'm not having trouble with the colours and contrasts but I am having trouble with the really blown out sections of the scan. These are 30 year old slides that are badly marked that I have scanned. I know that I cant get any detail back in the blown bits but how can I tone them down. When I try to burn back a little darkness it pixelates really badly.

I tweaked the picture a little bit and cleaned some of the noise up. I think i'm gonna try coloring this for sh*ts and grins just to see how it turns out. If you don't want i won't post it since i don't want to edit "your" picture. Here it is with some cloning and makeover tool from Corel PSP X2.

I dont mind the balck and white. Is the makeover tool similar to the healing tool in PS?
It's for a friend of a friend , she will pay for the cost of the photo and do me a favour back sometime.
You can send it to me at scottwhiddon@knology.net and I will attempt to restore it. First let me see if I have understood what you want done.
1. restore to original as best as possible.
2. The tone and color are original so you want to keep that.
3. The picture was is only 30 years old but was made to look older.
I will work on it if you like and try to have it posted this weekend and send you the restored version back to you.

Ah. I asked because I think anyone asking for help should be clear whether it's a private project or something for pay.
Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer. I did only ask for hints and comments, what I am saying is that I am not asking for people to do it for me. I have been having a play and intend to take this project as well as the other three photos in this thread (which is also for a friend of a friend) with me while I am away all of next week for something to do.
I so appreciate what some have done for me so far and would be more than happy for an explanation on how to get the best results.
