The one thing I did not like of the original was the pile of hay on the ground? I thought it was just a tad un-natural.

These were shot close to sunset. And the brown in the babies fur coat stood out more with the sun. You can just see the same brown coloration in the tips of the adults Zebra's manes. |
I like the original image - possibly because I like the composition balance better and the notion that these two are a maybe a mated pair. I mean, I would have looked longer and thought about that - were they a pair, which one was female, or were they two males?
As to the Zebra, yes, I see upon closer inspection that it is the sun and the shade is similar to the older animals' mane crests - but at a glance it seemed to be a flare of some kind.
