I have the Canon 50mm 1.4, and its nice, the Canon 50mm 1.8 is also very nice from what I have read about it, plus it cost under $100 (probablly around $80 is a good price).
Just keep in mind that sensor size does matter!
You are going to a three time bigger sensor and F stops are not the same anymore,F1.4 for rebel will be extremelly shallow DOF and you might have soft focus issues!I don't see any purpose of buying 50 mm lens when you allready have it with the camera !
I bought my 50mm F1.8 soon afetr getting the camera. It's my favorite lens! It was also dirt cheap. I think it goes for about $70. I use it for portraits, and also as a lens to use indoors when I don't want to use my flash (which is often). It's very fast!
Kosta is correct, though. The DOF at 1.8 is quite narrow. Check this out. It was one of my test pictures before I bought the lens.
Anyway, you can't really go wrong at the price, and it's much faster than the kit lens. Go for it!

Low light focussing is faster, USM on the 1.4, the shallow dof (more extreme than a small digital but less extreme than a 35mm film camera, better edge to edge sharpness at fast/wide apertures and things like that. F1.4-F2.8 + ISO1600 is one heck of a low light no flash lens for things where you can get away with the shallower dof. Both 1.8 and 1.4 have better bokeh as well.

Yes, I am well aware of that, I am used to film, and miss the shallow DOF. I think that the wide DOF of the P/S digitals ruins some pictures. And yes, focusing will be very critical.
Thanks for the comments all, and thanks for posting the DOF example, that is just what I am looking for. Makes me feel better about making this large investment.
