I didn't enter this challenge because i wasn't sure, but i would love to know what people think of this shot for impressionism. I was going to use it but at the last minute backed out. Thanks.
Not sure how I would have scored but perhaps it was best to sit this one out given all the lively discussions:-)
I went out on several occasions to get something for the Impressionism challenge using either petroleum jelly smeared on plastiglass or the slow shutter, small aperature, with small movements in single capture that is mentioned in Freeman Patterson's Photo Impressionism book. Most did not come out great but I feel these two did. Love the color and movement in these that remind me of dancers
I went for the non-filtered one 'cause I thought photographers would appreciate in camera effects more.
and I didn't want to say it in my title either.
And I thought the challenge meant taking a photograph that captured or portrayed light/composition/motifs/etc in the manner and ethos of impressionism. Not making a photo look like a painting. I think death an reincarnation is my best chance of ever understanding these things :)
I worked on these 2 images for a few hours, only to use another image at the last moment and my score for 53%. Would I have scored higher if I had used one of these images instead? Do they look too fake or too busy?
I like the processing best on this one but the merger of the heron's head with the rocky shoreline detracts from it. The one you entered I voted very low, mostly because I disliked the color in it. So, yes, I would have scored this image at least 2 points higher.
I also think that this image has the best native exposure. The first one posted here has lost detail in the shadow of the heron's head. The one you entered is in harsh light and, again, the all-important head lacks definition. In-camera or PS filters totally aside, the underlying image needed to be strong to start with to get a 6+ score from me.

I agree about the rocks getting in the way of his head..this is the reason I didn't enter the photo. Thanks for your valued imput. I'm working on composition and lighting as it's my weak points. Harsh lighting seems to be my downfall, so it's my priority at the moment.
