So, yesterday we come home from a day of shooting. I have a Canon Pixma printer with card reader. I transferred my shots by drag and drop and was having a look at some while they ran. Then Becky sat down to do hers, had to wait for mine to finish, and was having a look.
When mine were done she made sure she waited until the reader finished flashing, took mine out and ran hers using the printer transfer program.
I think she also dragged and dropped some of her older shots from "my Pictures" to her folder. When it finished she opened "My Pictures" and there were no folders there beyond August 11!!!
They're.... gone. Simply vanished. They are NOWHERE to be found. There was older stuff in the recycling bin, so we know they weren't accidently dropped there then emptied. Hidden folders are visible, so they didn't accidently get hidden.
I'd been working on a shot in PS the night before, so I tried "open recent" to see if I could find where it had moved to... nope, doesn't exist. They're just GONE.
Anybody got any ideas where they might be? PLEASE tell me that they really didn't get poofed into the ether!! That's a whole MONTH of shots!!
Were any of the folders/files from each or your cards the same as existing folders/files? Did a popup come up with a question asking if you want to replace anything?

If not, try a recovery program like RescuePRO.
Nope, were filed by the current date. And it disappeared at least half a dozen folders, including the two we'd just finished transferring! :(
(At least we could re-transfer THOSE two folders)
Have you tried doing a file/folder search to see if they got drug somewhere else by accident?
Yes, that was the first thing I did. When that didn't find anything I tried pulling one out of hiding through photoshop. It says it doesn't exist.
I was just hoping there might be somewhere obscure that they could be buried that the normal routes wouldn't find but that a geek might know about.
When you searched...what did you search for? I would do an advanced search for all files with that file extension, and make sure that you ask it to look in "hidden files and folders" which it does NOT do by default.
If you have System Restore activated, you can restore your computer to the state it was on Friday, (or whenever all the folders were there). Then just re-add the most recent images from your memory card.
Please note that when you restore to a certain date, anything you have done since then will be lost. So backup any recent documents that you want to save to an external hard drive or USB stick.
Start Menu ->All Programs-> Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.
If you have System Restore activated, you can restore your computer to the state it was on Friday, (or whenever all the folders were there). Then just re-add the most recent images from your memory card.

Just an FYI - While it is ALWAYS important to backup your work, DATA files are not "lost" when you do a system restore. Only system files are changed. You will lose installed programs, and updates and such, but you will not lose work such as Word docs or image files.
I have a good bit of experience with system restore, as we are toying around with a dual-boot system using different OS's and have had to use system restore a number of times for resolving issues. I have never lost any work due to that. :)
