Well it's really cold outside (-30°C) and I'm going nuts! I much prefer shooting scenes and observences outdoors, but have been keeping myself busy doing indoor stuff for these last few weeks. Well...I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE !!! So I decided to create a project for myself, to get me outdoors and taking pictures through this bitter cold.
Here's my project: While going from one place to another in my car, I have decided to keep my camera by my side and snap off some shots while stopped at a traffic light or stop sign. Just roll down the window and shoot. Choices of subjects are limited, and time is usually of the essence. Sometimes the subject I want does not allow me to look through the viewfinder, so results are uncertain. To keep things simple, I put the camera on Program and used my prime 50mm F1.8. My intention right from the start was to convert these into high contrast BW.
Reading your post, I was chuckling at your "winter project", but then when I saw your shots, I was surprised at how great they all are. And here I thought you were crazy! Not so crazy after all!
You have a great concept here. I really enjoyed my trip through your gallery, there are some really fine shots. Thanks for sharing them
I used to drive from California to Michigan and back every summer. One summer, 1990 or so, I took along a Canon P&S that had a waist level finder and a detachable remote. I would take pictures by holding the camera upside down and sticking it out of the sunroof. If I recall, I got some interesting shots, but never did anything with them. Now I'll have to rummage through the archives to see if I can find them.
-30 here as well, dropping to -45 this afternoon, .. I can't get my fingers to thaw long enough to snap a shot. Great pics and love the dark black and white, shows the mood..which is chilly!!!!

Being in Montreal as well, I know where you are coming from. When the first big cold snap hit a couple weeks ago, I actually thought along the same lines as you did, and I brought my camera to and from work to take pictures of the bitter cold. I'm at work, but when I'm home I'll post my favorite one to my portfolio as well :)

I also hate going out and shooting when it is too damn cold. I have taken winter month to hone and play with indoor skills. One of my favorite is Black Light Photography. That is also why I loved the Light Painting challenge. Don't have to go outside!!! Time to move somewhere warm
tomorrow morning's forecast: -54 with the windchill. Um, exactly what temperature does skin freeze at??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got me beat. We're only going down to -36°C. Should feel like the tropics compared to you. I probably wouldn't even roll down my window at that temperature. Nothing but pictures taken through the window. LOL! Right now, I can't see out my window, since it's covered in filth and frost. NONE of the carwashes are working. It's too cold!
BTW, Thanks for the comments. I plan on doing this again a few times, at least. I'll probably change lenses next time, perhaps my 70-300 set at 70, then 100, 200 then 300. I'll surely see different things each time, just because of the focus length.

I'm from Newfoundland and, don't be mad at me, the funniest thing I've ever heard of is my friend's cat freezing to the under side of their front steps. The cat was missing for a couple of days, it survived, that's why I can laugh without having to duck from misc. objects being thrown at my head.
I'm too lazy to do the F/C conversion, but here's the reading from my digital thermometer on Saturday. One hour later it said minus 21°F. Another hour later it dropped off-line. . .
I'm near the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan and I completely understand the dilemma of shooting in the cold. This weekend we are going to an Ice Sculpting Festival and next month is the dog sled races and outhouse races! Ya might as well make your own fun in this weather.
mariomel, enjoyed the pictures very much! I know yall must hate us in the south always have sunshine but yesterday and today has been a big cold one for us! We only see it about once a year, looks like snow but its a blanket of ice! I have been taking pictures around the house. Wished i could go out in it to take pictures of all the people that got their cars in stuck in ditches or riding the guard rails like a horse, but then again I think I will stay safe and warm at home since they close nearly everything anyways in town! Anyways tell me what yall think of the south snow hereThe south sees snow? ICE!
We got an ice storm last night and out of school today i was hoping to get to take some cool pics, but it got up to 60 degrees today! what weird weather...

I wonder if you've come across a book by a New York taxi driver called David Bradford with the title "Drive-By Shootings". The difference is he takes photos from behind the wheel without looking through the viewfinder. I forgot to mention at the time that he was shooting film.
I can't even imagine living in the kind of weather conditions you describe. I've only ever seen snow once in my life and there wasn't terribly much of it then. But it was pretty dangerous because the people here don't know how to drive in the snow.
