That this is one of the outstanding challenge winners of all time in DPC, and that it is an absolute pleasure to see this image dominating the front page?
I was going to say "No." after reading your title to this thread, but after reading the whole thing, yes, it's good to see that image on the front page. And ... it gives me all sorts of ideas of what to do with that wide angle lens I got a few months ago that I haven't figured out how to use.
My thoughts exactly! It was my top pick of the challenge, in fact it was one of my two highest "disagreements" per the "DPC Votes" tool, @ +1.58. I voted it a 9, and may have given it a 10 had it not been for some processing artifacts.
I absolutely love the image, it's so "out there" and yet connects in such an immediate way. Brings a smile to my face every time I see it!

But seriously, the extreme "up close and in your face" presence of this picture adds a LOT of impact. And the angle of the shot gives it a 3D effect. And ya gotta love how sharp it is thoughtout the detail.
um it's just a goofy picture of a cow with a wideangle lens and a ridiculous depth of field.
Well I like animal photos so I rated it a 7 but if I didn't have that bias it probably would have gotten a 5 or a 6. I'd be interested to know why people love this photo so much to think it's one of the best ever at DPC. It's certainly not some ground breaking shot. We get about one of these close up distorted shots every so often. In fact we had another one in this challenge of horse, I believe. There's also Pedro's famous horse shot. Granted, I'm probably bias on things I perceive to be more equipment wow than photographer wow.
I think a wider lens should have been used. Cutting off the tongue kinda makes me cringe as it reminds me someone putting their tongue on a frozen pipe and getting it stuck there.
Having seen shots like this before, I tried recently to get one, but failed. It's not as easy as it looks!
Nothing is as easy as it looks when taking photos (for me anyway, the newbie). Apart from knowing your equipment and how to use it there is timing and light and just plain old good luck to it some times.
