The "circle around the outside" is called vignetteing. It disappears, or at least is minimized, when you zoom out all the way. Sometimes you can still use the images that have vignetteing by cropping them. Your camera is a good one and your portfolio shows you have an eye for photography, especially for people shots. I agree with coolhar. I, too, consider the S85 a little jewel. Using a tripod, IMO, is a must with a telephoto/teleconverter/macro lens.
