I have been helping my daughter learn how to take pictures other than point-and-click. Her first challenge a couple of months ago here she outscored me.
I started teaching my wife (who has been taking pictures for a long time with film) how to use my digital camera.
I offered up the first two choices I came up with for the Road Signs challenge to them to take pictures of for their entries.
That's the last time. My daughter is currently ahead of me (again) and my wife looks like she may ribbon her first challenge. With one of the first 5 pictures she has EVER taken with my digital camera.
They are never going to touch it again.
Just keep repeating "I must be a good teacher. I must be a good teacher..."
I got it made, no competition in my family. They don't care about a camera more than snapshots and when I shoot something from a different angle or a strange object, They are like, "What in the world are you up to now." But one thing about it, I would think it would give you a far greater incentive to strive for a excellent shot as there is eminent and more personal competition.

If I take a nice landscape, or a stunning sunset shot, the wife will merely comment 'kirei da yone'/ 'that's pretty, isn't it?', then nothing more. If I take an ugly snapshot of the baby smiling, it'll be printed out and on the tabletop for the next week.
