I know that this was a speed challenge, so not everyone had time to get really into it, but is anyone else as disappointed as I am at the lack of submissions that took real advantage of the Advanced Editing rules? So few of the submissions used any of the special processing features allowed under these rules. I made a point to do so with my own photo, but most of the shots in this are "merely" out-of-the-box photos. Some really fine work in there, but I'm avoiding voting on most of them as I don't think they really did what the challenge was about. Am I just plain out of it? Am I misinterpreting something?
Advanced editing allows you to do layers to improve the image, remove minor defects, dodge and burn, etc, but the challenge does not require it. Just because someone did not use advanced editing techniques does not mean it does not fit the challenge. The Rules set simply allows you to use those techniques if you wish.
But I agree- there seem to be a lot of snapshot images in this challenge...

Expert editing is what is allowed. Nothing says you have to edit the crap out of a pic. The challenge was a free study. How can an entry not be 'what it is about'???
Robert - I think the OP is confusing the editing rules with the challenge description. Since it is a Free Study - everything goes. But I think the OP is suggesting that many of the images are not highly processed and he was expecting the images to be more 'processed', whatever that is...
Yeah, that's pretty-much it. I understand that "Free Study" is *free*: do what you want. I have no objection with this, and, as I wrote, there is a lot of fine work in the submissions. I'm not really confusing the rules with the subject of the challenge; I'm just kind of surprised that more people didn't make better use of the available techniques in the Rules to do something a bit more "memorable", a little different, whatever that might mean. I guess I was hoping to see some nifty effects work, not "just" a lot of nice landscapes, close-ups, etc. I jumped at the chance, as we get so few opportunities to do all the neat special stuff, and I guess I was thinking everyone else would, too. I'm obviously on the wrong side of the fence on this, which is fine; I'm over there most of the time ;-)

Do I have it right?

Are you sure you're not confusing "advanced" with "expert"? You cannot add "effects" in advanced.

I think he must be, only thing that makes sense... The Free Study being voted on is advanced ruleset; the monthly Free Study this month is Expert ruleset.
But this Free study didn't allow for the expert editing you need to create special effects. It was simply an advanced editing challenge which limits you to layering, dodging burning and typical stuff like that. What kind of advanced editing stuff are you missing in the photos. I saw what looked like the same kind of advanced editing processing you get in any advanced editing challenge ??????
* apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process."
What am I missing in this? What am I misinterpreting? I've not had a challenge to my submission, and I've seen a couple of other shots that have had obvious "effects" applied to them. If I did not interpret the Rules properly, then I think that the use of the word "effects" in them is incorrect. Yes, I am not a Member; I don't have the time to take advantage of it or to submit a shot every week, so spending the money is not logical at this time.
foxinsox47 - Yes - you can apply filters, effects and the like, but most voters prefer to see pretty colors and pretty girls and pretty macros of butterflies more than a bunch of over the top processing effects. Just because you "May" use an effect, doesn't mean you have to...and most voters won't like it anyway...
I haven't looked at all the pictures in this study, but I think what the OP was trying to say is that since this is not basic editing rules, why are some images still containing dust spots or obvious, easy to remove flaws?
Personally, there are some great shots in there. But I would have to vote something lower if it contained glaring problems that would have been easy to fix.

48 hour submission period and the intense urge to 'get something in' probably accounts for some less than stellar entries. Fighting that urge is the best thing you can do for your average vote received.
I spent 1 hour and about 50 shots. The idea was very good, it looked much better in real life, looks like (well, I can't tell you right now)... and I thought I would get around 6.6, because of the idea and how the image came out. I am not sure if people really didn't like it, or didn't see the idea on my photo, I don't know, but I am around 5.8s and I wish I would finish in 6+ even 6.0001
Anyway, there are GREAT photos even though it was a speed challenge ;)

Just my $0.02.
Not everyone knows how to do those things, even if they are easy to some of us.
It will be interesting to see the voting on the expert editing free study. Just because the extra leeway is there to do different things, will pictures get voted down if we don't? I'm all for trying new things, but I won't submit something that I hacked up because the rules allow it. I have a picture that I'm tempted to submit that looks great under minimal editing, but I know I'll do at least basic on it.
I hope in the end the best photo will win, not the best photoshopped photo.

Amen to that!,
after weeks of submitting over 6 entries, i got the urge for this one, and am paying deerly, my entry is barely a 5.4

Amen to this. It seems that some people put more emphasis on photoshop than the actual composition of the picture. I do agree, that photoshop makes it more appealing, but for those who shoot we also appreciate the photo composition.
Back before photoshop we had Black and White film photos. And some of those are the best Ive seen because of the composition not because of the editing.
I hope in the end the best photo will win, not the best photoshopped photo.
I also hope the best photo wins but unfortunately the most creative, most original, most artistic one probably doesn't have a chance. I'll take that any day, photoshopped or not over the carbon copy photos that typically grace the front page.

I agree - though, that will be a cold day...
So maybe it's time for an "out of the box" challenge. "Submit your most creative, most original, most artistic photo. Sunsets, flowers, and macros of bugs are subject to DNMC."
