Some body started a thread that he/she does not like personal messages and wishes to ignore them. Well enough. A new section was opened for this 'valid concern'.
Now I wish to ignore some of the people I feel are too cold hearted and I strongly dislike them. And I do not want to read their post or see their post in any thread. And I do not want to see their messages taking space on my computer screen.
There is no way for me to know in advance, which threads have messages from the users I dislike.
So I wish to have an option to completely and permanently ignore such users. So that their messages are turned off when I see the thread.
Is it possible to have this option?
Yeah, its a real pain to do, and also, youll find yourself unignoring the users due to keep with the continuity of a thread.
Another board I post on (centerfuse.net) has an ignore user function, so when you are reading a thread that the person has posted in, there is a little mark where they posted saying "post by _____" and you have the option of clicking on it.
But due to the fact that people "quote" others in threads, you will probably end up seeing whatever the ignored had posted anyway.
Since every thread and post has the person's name right beside it, you could just "not look" at the text. Sometimes I'll get to that point with a user and skip right over whatever they type. Oh darn, there I go being cold hearted again. FWIW, I've seen some of the most obnoxious people turn around and become voices of reason. It's slightly less common than three dollar bills, but it does happen.

Yepp this is what I do.
But then I also used to think that if someone puts a personal thread, about his/her problem, another user once notice that the thread is personal could ignore it completely. (He/She does not need to read the full thread to see if it was worthless and personal in nature).
If feel if that was too much a trouble for someone to take, I guess I can also wish to ignore some users rather through the ignoring their posts part. (In fact sometimes it is pain to scroll through, their useless posts, and my figures do hurt in the process).
What we need is an un-favorite list, aka... sh*t list. That way people could get an idea how much their posts annoy other people. ;-) But then, I'd probably be on a few lists. :-(

However, I had understood DPC to be primarily aimed at adults. If people are so sensitive that they develop hatred for other people and cannot function where they are present, then perhaps the internet is a dangerous place for them to visit at all...

I was on a forum where you could ignore users. I tried it just to see how it worked because it had been mentioned here. I lasted about 10 minutes because the thread I was reading had her posts were every second or third one, and I wanted the information in the thread.
It might work if you had one user blocked and they didn't post much, but if you block someone (or several) who post regularly, your forum experience is going to be greatly diminished.
From a technical stand point, you'll have record everyone's list of people they don't want to see. Then dynamically list the threads accordingly.
If you can't just display the current threads, you won't be able to cache the data. This might make it a big database it everytime a user loads the forum pages.
I'm to too good at php since I mostly work with Microsoft products, but I'm assuming the site is using MySQL (since that usually comes with php pages). I don't know if MySQL can be optimized for this change, but I would think these calls could slow the site down.
It's a nice feature, unless DPChallenge has the hardware and software to support it, I don't think it'll happen

I think it's possible that people who don't want to read about other people's problems do so because they are entirely too warm-hearted. It's possible that some people might come to DPC hoping to escape from their real-world problems and think about photography instead, and reading about divorce, infidelity, death, and illness upsets them because it reminds them too much of the divorce, infidelity, death and illness in their own lives.
The new personal forum lets those that want to engage in this kind of conversation to do so, and those who don't want to be exposed to it -- regardless of their motivation -- to avoid it. What's the problem?

Just for the record, we never block posts we "disagree" with, they will only be blocked if more than one SC member feels they violate the forum rules or ToS. Thank you.
