The top right diagram :
In S,A or M mode you can only choose flash-off or flash-forced-on. So you have to choose yourself.
In auto mode (the camera symbol) you can also leave it on auto (no symbol shown on LCD/EVF). In dark circumstances it will then automatically flash.
It will not automatically pop up with strong back light, if that is the fill-in flash you mean. You will have to force that yourself.
