I don't have any experience with that lens, however I do have the Canon 75-300mm f4.0 - f5.6 III USM Auto-Focus lens and I love it! I find I use that lens 90% of the time now over the kit lens. B&H has that lens for $174.95 after rebate.
The Sigma 75-300mm is an older model lens and is no longer supported by Sigma and will not work with the Canon EOS 10D or 300D. I was told this by the Techs when I called about having a new chipset installed.
The Sigma 70-300mm will work, and if it is one of the older makes (2-3yrs) you can have the new chipset installed if it does not work with the new Canon EOS 10D.
They told me Canon changed the firmware in the new digital models whereas when the camera sends the message to close the lens shutter it ends up with an error 99. If you can manage to shoot with the lens aperature wide open he said you should not get the error message. I Have not tried this but it would be very limiting in my opinion.

the camera shop told me there would be no issues with the sigma its an f4:5.6 version, and she actually pushed the sigma over the higher priced canon equivelent...
i think it actually was a 70-300mm f4:56. -w macro option.
my mistake.
i asked about itt possibly needing to be rechipped, and she said it wouldn't need it, and i should have no probs...
i also mentioned the shutter lock up issues, and she said it wouldn't be an issue on the 300d - i played with the rebel/lense combo a bit, and didn't notice any glitches. thinking of picking it up today.
The Pro shop where I go gives me very special prices (match anything I get from the internet) and they had great prices on the Canon gear.
But the local mom/pop shop here will rob you blind on most any gear.

The bottom line of an article I read on the review of like 200 lenses for digital cameras, said that there was very little difference in most lenses today and they suggested looking more at the warranty than the lens itself.
This is comparing equivalent models though, not a Canon 70-300mm IS to a Sigma 70-300mm.
Not sure if I would add Phoenix lenses to this list though :) I have not heard to much on these low cost lenses.
But as far as Sigma, Canon, Quataray and etc I think the quality is going to be very close.
i have an older canon al1 -w a couple sigma lenses i like very much. one is a 24mm wide angle that produces well, but this goes back a number of years...
the one i am looking at now has a 5 year warranty i believe, and the shop offers a no questions asked repair service ( for a fee of course )
but i was told i could kick it across the room and they would fix it. or if i went to the desert and it was full of sand they would clean it.
and well hell - if i had another $1000 to burn of course i would go with a higher end lense, but thats why i am looking for feedback here.
another side note, - i thought of this yesterday while at the shop..

I like the lens but I'm about ready to move into some prime focal lengths just to get more speed and sharper images.
perfect - glad to hear you're happy with it, would prefer a better lense, but budget is tight, and i am in need of more focal length.
lots of woodpeckers, and birds nearby i cant get close enough too.
as well as just haveing more range...
