I was going to post this in challenge results forum, but realized I'm just ranting so thought better of it and posted here...;)
With that said, I have come to an epiphany here at DPC. I have realized that it doesn't matter what your subject is, as long as it has pretty colors and is ridiculously tack sharp, it will win a ribbon.
Just look at the winner of the June free study. It's an f'n ugly ass maggot with wings of all things, yet it's tack sharp and has pretty colors.
Don't get me wrong. That photographer knows what he is doing and deserves ribbons, but not that ribbon, my God!
OK, rant off, but I think I now know what to do to win a ribbon here.

Nope, just gotta have pretty colors or nice titties I guess.
It helps to capture a technically outstanding image that reveals details few, if any, of us have ever really seen of an otherwise mundane object/creature. I think it's a hell of a picture and I'm not surprised it won. How can you not stare at it and be amazed?

Well the OP is talking about winning ribbons on DPC, not philosophizing about the ephemeral traits of some intangible notion of 'art' while staring into his navel...

You truly need to be a tad more specific when proffering comments of this ilk... I would suggest that you consider adding "to me" after the word "matters" since what does matter is seemingly open to debate.
The gist of your comment could be construed as being somewhat condescending to those who the general DPC membership, as you seem to suggest that the views they expressed via their votes truly DO NOT matter.

There are plenty of sharp images with pretty colors in the lower end of every challenge. Without a good subject, those two traits alone won't get you past a 5. You obviously don't like flies. Fair enough, but the entry is a compelling view of a world most of us don't usually see. The detail is interesting and the subject stands out from a horde of sunsets, kids and flowers. Hence, ribbon.

Hey Lance, there are like several thousand photogs on this site that can produce a tack sharp image with pretty colors, yet there are significantly less that ribbon often.
