I do in fact find that saturation is increased when I underexpose by a stop. I have also found that both contrast and saturation vary together with the quality of the glass. I recently switched from the Canon 28-200 f/3.5-5.6 to the 70-200 f/2.8, and there is a noticeable difference; beter contrast AND better saturation. With the 28-200 I was always tweaking contrast & sat UP, now if I tweak at all it is DOWN.
It makes sense that if there is reduced contrast there will also be reduced saturation.
Under good conditions the 28-200 is a pretty good lens, whereas the 70-200 really excels, and under a much wider range of conditions.
