Took some random pictures of a chain I saw out walking around last weekend and just now got around to looking at them. They came out somewhat drab, so I adjusted contrast, hue and saturation and did a small amount of sharpening. The last one was desaturated in every channel but red, just for experimentation.











I kind of like the second one and the green one (was trying to go for mold, but not quite sure how 'authentic' it might look). Any feedback would be appreciated - especially if you have some sort of [constructive] criticism.. too artificial looking, oversharpened, uninteresting, poor composition, etc. Please let me know!

Rust is a fun subject because of it's texture and color variations. These are pretty well taken pictures but not very interesting other than experimentation as you say. I don't find them oversharpened but any more probably would be. You've got the focus and the DoF right, sharp links and blurred background. The green is too bright to suggest mold, more like it was painted a while back. All but the last one are pretty big files, they take some time to load for the folks who use dial-up. Smaller files usually get you more views and comments here on dpc. Your 717 is a quality camera so you shouldn't need to do a lot of color changing in your post camera processing, the important first step is to use White Balance to get as close as possible out of the camera.

Thanks for the advice and feedback. I kind of felt the same way about the green, but making it a darker color seemed a bit dull to my eyes - so I was curious how this would go over. I didn't get a chance to do white balance while I was down at the dock, but I mostly did color modification just to bring out the tones in the rust a bit more (and make them a little 'rustier' - or at least I hope so) than they came out in the originals.

And, I reduced the file sizes (I guess I take my broadband for granted) to under 100kb each (didn't realize the others were all almost 250kb.. thought they were around 160 - thanks for that, as well) a bit to be more modem friendly. Thanks!

I do like the green one... looks like corroded copper... which is always nifty in my book :D
