I have a question for the 300D users on the site...it's actually a two parter.
1. Do you use non-canon lenses?
If the answer to question 1 is YES, move on.
2. How long have you been using your 300D?
AND
3. Have you ever had an ERROR 99?
I ask these questions because I had an Error 99 after a month of using my 300D. I called Canon and they told me that it was likely caused by my use of non-canon lenses. I plan to get a replacement for the camera (I bought it at sears and paid for the replacement warranty, the only hold up is that there aren't any 300Ds available right now), but I want to know if the guy at Canon was feeding me the party line (which I suspect) or if I should sell my Quantaray and Tamron lenses.
The 10D has the same issue when used with some 3rd party lenses, I believe some people have returned their lenses to be 'chipped' by the manufacturer to work correctly with the 10D. You may want to try contacting the lens manufacturers?
1. Do you use non-canon lenses?
Yes, Canon kit lens- and three Sigma 70-300mm, 28-80mm, and the 105mm Macro.
3. Have you ever had an ERROR 99?
Yes, Askey Review under Canon 300D you'll find it.
I have not had the Error 99 trouble.
That doesn't mean I won't and that I don't think it's a valid concern. IMHO it's a small group of owners that have had this trouble..why I don't know.
There are a lot of 300D users out there and it just seems to me the percentage is low.
Good luck, sorry for the trouble you have had.
I did have an Err99 with my Sigma 28-105 2.8-4, but I sent it back to Sigma and they rechipped it free. Since then, the lense works flawlessly. Thats the only non-Canon lens I own though.
I have 10D and just Canon lenses and I have got this error on every lens I own ... I thought that this had something to do with the memory not the lens?
Birgir, Err99 is the fallthrough when the camera cant tell you what kind of error it had. It can get one anytime something happens that it cant handle. The Err99 on most older Sigma lenses is due to the incompatible chips in the lens, thats whey Sigma fixes it free. With your Canon lenses, try making sure the contacts are clean between the lens and camera. Memory can do it also as well as sometimes with larger lenses a low battery.

Thanks for your help.

Can't help you much, Shari, since I don't own the Rebel, but Ritz is selling a Rebel kit that includes 2 Quantaray lenses...so I wouldn't think non-Canon lenses are the problem, but I don't really know. If the lenses didn't work with the Canon, I doubt Ritz would be selling them in the kit.

The issue generally occurs with older lenses, newer versions of the lenses should be compatible with the 10D/300D.

The tamaron lens is older...maybe a few years. The Quantaray (the lens the first Error 99 happened with) I bought the week before xmas.
I have no experience with Quantaray lenses, but as the 10D itself is a relatively new camera these issues have only come to light within the past year. So even if the lens was purchased recently it is still possible that the problems existed when the lens was manufactured? If the lens has a serial number on it I would note that and contact Quantaray.

The lens could have been an older model, even though it was new. Quantaray is made by sigma. If you call them, they are very nice and will help you figure out if you need it to be rechipped or not.
I've been using mine for about 2 weeks now. With a Canon 75-300mm III, a Sigma 28-80mm and a Phoenix 500mm mirror reflex lens and haven't gotten error 99 yet. Does it give you the error no matter what lens you use?
pitsaman, that is a very nice lens, but I don't think I would buy a zoom with that large of range. From the specs I've seen, the wider the span from short to long, the worse the image gets from the optics. They don't have it listed at photodo.com so I'm not able to look at the MTF graph.
I'll be getting that lens eventually. It has a big reach. Not fit for indoor lighting, but most people I've seen with this lens love it. Imma get me one.
Checking in on the 50-500 Sigma lens. I bought mine just before Xmas and have used it in action sequences and also did bird photography in overcast weather. In each case it worked beautifully. But a sturdy tripod or substantial 'beanbag' is an absolute necessity. No error messages yet.
Since I don't have a Digital Rebel :-( This is just a guess. First of all you probably may want to consider getting the older non-canon lenses re-chipped as I am positive this is a real issue. Another thing that you may want to consider from what I have read somewhere is that it may help to turn the camera off when you change lenses. You may already be doing this and as I said this is only a guess. Good luck with the camera.
