You can use contrast masking too.  Bear_Music introduced this to me and it works well.
Duplicate your layer.
Desaturate and inverse the duplicate layer.
Put the duplicate layer in softlight or overlay mode and adjust opacity to taste.
Do a tiny bit of Gaussian blur to that layer to clean up the edges.
Hopefully Robert will come clean up anything I missed, forgot to mention and/or messed up.
