refering to the screenshot above, the surrounding area of my images when maximized in now black instead of grey,
how do i return it to the default color?
i have tried 'window> workspace > default workspace' but it doesn't work, it only resets the palettes to their default location. Am using PS CS2

I ran into that problem recently ;)

Select the foreground color (on the tool pallete's color swatch) you want , select the paint bucket fill tool, then hold SHIFT and click the workspace. That should do the trick.

Oh the original color for the workspace should be : #808080

or rgb: 128,128,128

Gee, I wish I'd known this the other day, when I wanted the PS background area to be black ... thanks for the tip!

If you just want to see what your image will look like on gray & black -- use the "F" key. :)

hahaa.. yea, didn't know that one can actually do that to the workspace!
