I don't have a picture to give you all an idea of what I am talking bout because I am not at home on my computer but I have a question either way. I have a few pictures of my sister at her graduation that I took outside. When it was all over I was snapping shots of her all the way back to the car! The whole background was black and then she has black hair also so it kind of blends, is there any tool in photoshop or any way I can fix that? I am sorry I don't have a picture to show you what I am talking bout but hopefully you can help either way!

Go to Image->Adjustments->Shadows/Highlights

Play around with that and see if you can bring it out. Not sure if this will help, but worth a shot.

Alright, I will have to try this out! Even when I do try those tools I'm still not good at working with them but I guess practice and playing around with the tools will eventually help me to get the hang of it all. Again thanks!

You're right. Practicing and Playing around helps you learn ALOT! You should read some of the tutorials too. I know there are a few that might help you fix the problem. Post the pic when you get home (as long as it's not in a current challenge) and I'm sure some peeps could try to help.

I'm not an expert by any definition, but I'll try when I get home tonight. I doubt you'll be able to bring much detail into the background. Her hair being mostly out of the frame should make that part a bit easier though.
I'll tell you how I would do it...you can try too. I would make a duplicate layer and adjust until you like the background. Don't worry about what she or her clothes or the paper look like. Then I'd use the eraser to remove this effect from her, her clothes, and the paper (adjusting the fill and opacity until the desired effect is achieved). Give it a try and we can compare notes tonight.
