Yet another challenge to skip. Tacky Christmas displays seem to be more of an American thing. They basically just have plain white lights on the trees here in Sweden... nothing at all tacky. It does say the tackiest you can find, but I can just see all the "this isn't tacky" comments now.
I was so excited to see this challenge, I just hope my neighbor doesn't ask why I'm taking pictures of his decorations, I'd hate to have to tell him its for a photo contest of tacky christmas decorations lol... I think I'll have a pretty good shot at this one, if four nativity scenes in one yard isn't tacky I'm not sure what is?

All jokes aside... what kind of exposure should be used for taking photos of bright lights at night? I tend to get a "star" effect around lights at night. Is there a way to avoid this?

The star effect is a result of a small, non-circular aperture. Try shooting at widest aperture, though this will of course reduce the DoF.
The star effect is a function of the lens, specifically the design and number of the aperture blades. Experiment and see how you can make the effect less or greater, and how it changes with different lenses.
What is "tacky"? I don´t understand this challenge, too... I don´t improve my english... arrrrghhh...
Here in the states there are people who go to the excess with Christmas lights and yard decorations. There are some who light up a whole block with their decorations. Instead of a tasteful arrangement of a few well made outdoor decorations they have an overabundance of poorly made decorations in their yard. Also, there can be other types of tacky decorations such as the ornaments my husband bought last year and I refused to put on the tree. There were three very large fuzzy deer ornamnets in a package for a dollar and they were overpriced if you price by quality. I hope this helps you understand the tacky contest. Surely, someone in your country goes to excess with ugly cheap decorations.
